In 2019, Franz Hauk produced two church music recordings for Naxos with his Ingolstadt choir and instrumental ensemble: a compilation of Vesper (psalm settings) compositions from c. 1820 by the young Donizetti and a Messa di gloria in E-flat major by Johann Simon Mayr from c. 1843. This chapter compiles an inventory and overview of the two works. It investigates the musical representation of the Office and the Mass from a genre-historical perspective. In addition, it examines the quality of the individual compositions as well as the practice and aesthetics of Italian church music in the first half of the 19th century.
